Super Cetaceans

Second grade projects are just about as exciting as kindergarten projects. Rachel hopes you enjoy her paragraph about her favorite cetacean, the bottlenose dolphin.

Dolphins

Bottlenose dolphins are cetaceans. Bottlenose dolphins live in groups of 10-30 members called pods. Dolphins have good eyesight so they can see in the water. They can’t smell anything. Dolphins hunt in groups. Lots of dolphins come out and scare the school of fish towards other dolphins. Then the dolphins eat all the fish. Bottlenose dolphins use echolocation to find their food. Echolocation vibrates to something then it bounces back. If it hits a big white shark, then the dolphin needs to swim away. Dolphins are smaller than other whales. Dolphins like to jump and play. Dolphins are great cetaceans.

It seriously took us over an hour to construct this silly dolphin with toilet paper rolls and duct tape. We were going to use paper mache and paint, but then I thought of all the duct tape I had in my drawer left over from a Father's Day duct tape wallet gift my students made a few years ago.

Another use for duct tape...second grade dolphin projects. We put the dorsal fin on backwards and one flipper is higher than the other. Do you think her teacher will notice? Rachel didn't notice and I didn't want to point it out to her. She is a perfectionist and it would have bothered her.

Use your imagination...it really is a dolphin...
