I love the Sturge-Weber Foundation. They are a very helpful and supportive organization. They have made a great video that is featured on their homepage. Erin Joy's picture is on the video. Watch carefully and you will see it.
I am trying to lose weight for the SWF. I am hoping people will pledge $1.00 or $.50 a pound and I am hoping to lose 50 pounds by next May. May is the foundation's "Month of Awareness." If you would like to sponsor me, please leave a comment on my new blog. I will collect next May through a "FirstGiving Account" that has already been set up. I am hoping this will finally be the motivation I need to do something about my weight problem. Thanks!

Happy Forever Family Day Erin Joy!
Today is Erin Joy's Forever Family Day! (I can't decide what to call it. Please vote for your favorite name in the poll.) I really don't like the term "gotcha." It sounds like somebody swatting a mosquito. It really isn't her official adoption day. That happened the next day on May 30th, but it was just a bunch of boring paperwork. Nothing like the moment I saw her for the first time. I think I can't decide what to call it because words don't begin to describe the emotions I felt that day and the emotions that Erin Joy felt.
Today Erin Joy placed a third ornament on her "Forever Tree." I gave her a panda this year in honor of the pandas who were also victims in the Sichuan earthquake. Notice the shirt she is wearing: "I was worth the wait." Yep. That's true. She was definitely worth the wait. Here is a very short (40 second) video with pictures of our special day set to the chorus of the song we listen to every year on this day.
Three years ago, I held Erin Joy for the first time. May 29, 2005 is a day I will never forget. I had waited so long. I had been looking at her picture for almost a year and anticipating the day I could finally hold her in my arms. She wasn't as excited to see me. When I look at old video and pictures, I see a very confused and scared toddler. She wanted nothing to do with me. I was just another transition. Just another person. She had lived in at least four other places before being adopted. She didn't know I was her mother. She didn't know I loved her and would never leave her. She didn't know that no matter how much she screamed, cried, bit me, kicked me, scratched me, and pushed me away I was there to stay.
Her behavior the first few weeks is so different from the sweet, kind, pleasant child I know today. As she placed an ornament on her "forever family tree," I was overcome with the feeling of love I have for her. She is my daughter. I love her more than words can express.
I made a little movie with pictures of our first day together, a few pictures from the past few years, and current pictures. I love you sweet Erin Joy!!

Fun With a Friend
I love the day after a laser treatment. I have to take a day off and stay home to watch Erin Joy for signs of infection, discomfort, blisters, swelling, and so forth. Erin Joy has always been fine and today was no exception. The day after surgery means a bonus day off for us.
Rachel invited a friend to come over after kindergarten and the girls had a blast playing together. Their favorite thing was collecting snails in a bucket. They must have had at least 20 snails. They fed them popcorn (I'm sure the snails loved the salt), gave them water (drown them), and built them houses out of sand at the river. I'm not sure how many lived which was fine with me. I don't want snails eating my flowers.
I put a few of the pictures from today in a slideshow. It makes me anxious for summer. I'm still watching that countdown closely!

Laser Number Ten
Erin Joy was all smiles as she climbed into the car this morning. We didn't have to leave at 4:30 like the last laser. We even got to sleep in 30 minutes later than usual. Nice!
Traffic was good and we arrived at Children's Hospital in Seattle 10 minutes early. That hardly ever happens. Unfortunately, her doctor was behind schedule and we had to wait three hours from the time we checked in to the time she was taken back for surgery. They gave her "giggle juice" too early. She was terrible. She kept trying to get off my lap. I wasn't supposed to let her off my lap because the medicine makes her loopy and dizzy. I physically couldn't restrain her any longer and she forced her way off my lap. Sure enough....she fell about three or four times. She just giggled. She really acted drunk. By the time they took her back to surgery, the stuff had worn off and they wanted to give her more. No way! I had had enough of my daughter acting loopy. She was still smiles when they took her away.
Here she is all smiles on the way back to anesthesia. She took her special doll and towel with her. Notice the red spot. She gets eczema on her face. She kept scratching and it became infected. The doctor didn't laser around her eye this time and gave us two different ointments to help the eczema and control the infection. I hope it works.
She woke up fairly happy. She ate six Popsicles and drank a cup of apple juice. After being released, we went to the hospital cafeteria and she chose a huge cookie as her special treat. She licked all the frosting off and almost ate the whole cookie.
Usually, she sleeps all the way home. Not today. She jabbered and sang happily all the way home today. When we got home, she saw her face in the mirror and said, "I all black." I don't think she has ever noticed before. I told her that is what happens after laser and it will get lighter and help her birthmark be healthier. She said, "Oh, thank-you Mommy. You my genius." (This is her new word. She has no idea what it means.)
Now we are both off to bed....

Memorial Day Hike
We had a great time today. We went on a little hike along the old railroad tracks near the Stillaguamish River with several friends. The old tunnel was especially fun. Unfortunately, I dropped my camera on some rocks while we were crossing a scary landslide. The top is dented and very scratched, but it still works. I love my little Canon!
Rachel says her favorite part of the hike was eating lunch.
Erin Joy says her favorite part of the hike was playing with Tuki-Luki (her doll that rode in a backpack).
My favorite part was talking to friends and taking pictures.

Chuck E Cheese
The girls had a great time at a friend's birthday party at Chuck E Cheese today. They have never been to Chuck E Cheese before. Rachel is now planning to have her birthday party there. She will probably change her mind 50 more times before her birthday in December. It's a good thing she has been planning her birthday party since January.

Rachel's Kindergarten Program
Rachel did a fabulous job singing and dancing last night at her kindergarten program. I did a fabulous job of not crying. I'll save that for kindergarten graduation on June 9th.
Here is a little bit of her program (I used a little bit of each song and dance to make it shorter). Notice Erin Joy dancing on my friend's lap during the "Chicken Dance."
Great job, Rachel!

Story by Rachel
Rachel has learned so much this year in kindergarten. Check out her great story posted above. She forgot a few words. I'll add what she meant to say in brackets and help her with her spelling a little.
Translation:
"I love my cat. My cat caught a bird. I [went] to the park with my sister [and played] on the swings. I like to play. I love to sleep. I never wake up."
I laughed very hard when I read the sleeping part. This story is definitely non-fiction. She loves to sleep and I have a terrible time waking her up in the morning. Erin Joy gets up early every day regardless if it a school day or a vacation day. I have to drag Rachel out of bed every day...even Saturdays. We have dance class at 10:30 in Seattle which is about an hour drive from our house. Last Saturday, she was still sleeping soundly at 9:30.
She got mad when I woke her up. "You told me I could sleep in today," she complained.
"You did sleep in. You slept in until 9:30."
"Well, I'm not done sleeping yet."
Sheesh...she is going to be really hard to wake up when she is a teenager. That's coming faster than I would like...

Fancy Nancy
Rachel and Erin Joy both LOVE the book Fancy Nancy . The book reminds me of Rachel. Like Rachel, Nancy tries to help her family be more fancy. I knew Rachel would love the book and she does.
I was very surprised Erin Joy liked the book. She has never cared about being fancy. Recently, something has changed. I'm not sure if it is the book, her older sister rubbing off on her, or her new "special headband" that she earned by getting 10 good-day tickets at preschool. She wears her special headband EVERY day. She now wants to get dressed by herself. In the past, she has never wanted to dress herself and whined and complained when I made her dress herself.
I have a lot of pictures of Rachel being fancy, but not too many of Erin Joy. I think that it changing....
Here is the way Erin Joy went to school one day last week (check out the socks with the fancy shoes)

Adventures With Flat Scott
Flat Scott is visiting us from Idaho. We took him to the same places we took Flat Kaci and Flat Chen-Le. Saturdays are Chinese Dance/Language Class so we have to do something close to class. While Rachel was at class, Erin Joy and I took him to Carkeek Park by Puget Sound (Inlet of the Pacific Ocean.) Erin Joy was too scared to take him down the Salmon slide so poor Flat Scott just had to look at it. She wouldn't play on any of the playground equipment. She was acting very shy. Eventually, we just went on a little nature walk through the park.
While Erin Joy was at dance class, Rachel and I took him to our favorite restaurant for hot and sour soup. We love the waiter. He teases Rachel and she enjoys every minute of it. He is always amazed that Rachel loves spicy food. Rachel really loves hot and sour soup and she loves ma-po tofu which is also very spicy. Flat Scott loved the food too. He also enjoyed learning that he was born in the year of the snake. He likes snakes. Rachel was also born in the year of the snake, but she doesn't like snakes and would love to be another sign on the Chinese Zodiac. Flat Scott got a great fortune. Something about traveling with friends...I can't remember it exactly, but I did take a picture of Flat Scott holding it so watch for it in the slide show.
After coming home, we took Flat Scott to play at the Stillaguamish River across the street from our house. The river is a little high so there wasn't very much sand to play in, but he still had fun building castles, shopping malls, swimming pools, and hotels. He enjoyed catching a frog and being buried to his head in the sand.
Flat Scott is going to stay with us for awhile because he loves baseball. He just can't visit our house without going to a Mariner's game. We will take him to a game in June. Stay tuned for more adventures with Flat Scott in a few weeks.

Death of a Bird

Our cat, Bella, is quite the hunter. She traumatized all of us, especially Erin Joy, when she caught a bird a few days ago. Poor Erin Joy carried it into the house and asked me to help the "little birdy." I screamed, grabbed her, and threw the bird outside where Bella continued to play with it. I then thoroughly washed Erin Joy's hands.
Erin Joy sobbed heart wrenching sobs. I held her, hugged her, but I couldn't get her to calm down for a long time. When she finally settled down enough to talk, she kept asking about the bird. I really wished I wouldn't have reacted the way that I did when she brought the bird into the house. If I would have been thinking properly, I would have calmly buried the bird and had a little service rather than unmercifully throwing it back outside where Bella was patiently waiting to continue the massacre. Anyway, I told Erin Joy that the bird was with Aunt June in heaven and was very happy now.
"Will Aunt June take care of the bird?"
"Yes, Aunt June loves birds. She used to feed them. Remember throwing peanuts to the Stellar Jays at her house?"
"Does Jesus love birds?"
"Yes. He once said, 'Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of you head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.' That means He really loves birds and He really loves you, Erin Joy." (I didn't quote it exactly at that moment....I looked it up later...Luke 12:6-7 and something similar in Matthew 10:29-31)
"Jesus loves birds?" she asked once again.
"Yes."
Then Rachel joins in, "Are there cats in heaven?"
"Yes."
"Do the cats in heaven eat the birds in heaven?"
" Thanks, Rachel. You're really not helping your sister calm down. Would you please leave? No, the cats don't eat the birds in heaven."
"What do they eat?" Rachel asked.
"What do you think they eat?" I love turning questions back to her because her responses are usually funny.
"I think they eat cat food. They probably have stores in heaven and the angels buy cat food."
By the time the conversation of cats and birds in heaven was over, Erin Joy had calmed down. When she said her prayers that evening, she asked God to let Aunt June take care of the bird Bella killed. She has continued to pray for the bird. She is so sweet and compassionate. Rachel, on the other hand, has forgotten all about the bird and is on to other things.
I appreciate all the mice and moles Bella has killed, but I am done feeding the birds. It seems cruel to put bird seed out to lure them to their death.

Sunshine On My Shoulders
It has been so long since the sun shone, I hardly knew what it was when it made an appearance today. We were so excited that we had ice cream cones and got out the swimming pool. Tomorrow is supposed to be even warmer. Can it be??? I'm watching the countdown to summer very closely!

My Homework
Rachel is making homework for me. After we have school, I "hafto" do my homework. Notice she writes "Stacey" instead of "Mommy" because she insists that I use my "real" name.
I helped her spell the word "picture." She helped me identify the pictures of the grapes, gate, and green so I would get the correct answers. She gave me the nice star below my name when I answered correctly.
Draw something I love...that's easy...I drew a picture of Rachel and Erin Joy. I'm not a very good artist. Rachel was very mad that Erin Joy is taller than she is in the picture. She was also mad that I didn't include Bella, the cat, in the picture. She added Bella to my picture before giving me another star.

Earthquake in China
A mother and daughter from Seattle that I met at adoptive single parent gatherings are currently living in Chengdu. They are fine, but they have been sending emails talking about the damage and confusion they are surrounded by caused by the recent earthquake and aftershocks. They have been trying to reach a local orphanage to check on a child waiting for his forever family.
The following are pictures she sent:

Half the Sky is a wonderful organization that helps children in China living in orphanages. Here is a recent letter from them. If you want to do something to help, I highly recommend making a donation to them. I know they will put the money to good use. You can either follow the link in the attached email or click here to donate.
Hello again,
During the past several hours Half the Sky has been working hard to get
more information about the children impacted by the Sichuan and Chongqing
earthquake. We know that it is not only children in welfare institutions
who are in trouble. We know that hundreds of children have been separated
from their families, have lost their parents, are hurt, traumatized and in
pain. We know we must help; we have been working to figure how best to do
so.
We have just a little bit of news. There have been hundreds of
aftershocks, one reported to be as strong as 6.0. Children have again
been evacuated from the Chengdu institution. Relief workers have arrived
in the epicenter, Wenchuan. The Ministry of Civil Affairs (this is the
ministry that HTS works with and also the agency responsible for disaster
relief) has been unable to reach orphanages in the most affected areas:
Mianyang, Zitong, Deyang and Aba. There are other welfare institutions in
the affected areas but no others that house children. Each of the four
institutions above houses about 100 children. We believe they will need
help. We will continue to watch and wait.
Many of you have asked us to set up an emergency relief fund, like we did
during the winter storms. Given the nature of this disaster and the fact
that help for children may well be needed outside welfare institutions
(where we have a direct line) we have waited to set up such a fund until
we had absolute assurance that we could put a system in place to deliver
the aid where it is most desperately needed.
Half the Sky takes the designation of a donor-restricted gift seriously –
that’s our promise to you. We understand that when you make an emergency
donation, you put your trust in us. We have spoken very carefully about
this with our colleagues at the Ministry of Civil Affairs. We now have
their promise as well.
In cooperation with the ministry, we have now set up the Half the Sky
Children’s Earthquake Fund. Your donations to the fund will be used to
provide emergency and long-term relief to children affected by the
disaster. Relief will include emergency shelter, food, and medical care
for children orphaned or separated from their families. It will include
temporary or long-term foster care or, when necessary, temporary
institutional care.
We have a commitment from the ministry that we will receive regular
updates on the use of funds and, most important, the well-being of the
children.
Within a few hours we will have available a dedicated donation site. In
the meantime, if you wish to make a gift to aid children in Sichuan and
Chongqing affected by the quake, you may donate through our website,
www.halfthesky.org. Please note that your gift is for earthquake relief.
I will give you more information as I receive it. Please don’t write to
ask about the situation in specific locations. I will tell you everything
I know.
Thank you for caring so much about the children.
with love,
Jenny
Jenny Bowen
Executive Director
Half the Sky Foundation
www.halfthesky.org
Half the Sky was created in order to enrich the lives and enhance the prospects for orphaned children in China. We establish and operate infant nurture and preschool programs, provide personalized learning for older children and establish loving permanent family care and guidance for children with disabilities. It is our goal to ensure that every orphaned child has a caring adult in her life and a chance at a bright future.

Mother's Day Poems
Mother's Day
By Jennifer Wilson-Pines
One day a year,
The inevitable card, a dinner.
Mediocre chocolates in a box
elaborate enough to satisfy
a three-year-old's discerning taste.
Every day is mother's day
The hands stretched up for a hug,
pizza smeared kisses,
the soft warm weight
tucked in to my arms
trustingly surrendered to sleep.
Even the tired tantrums.
I am a mother
every second of the day.
My daughter is stitched
into every fiber of my life.
I love her with an intensity
that took me by surprise.
Surpassed only by the fear
of losing her.
But she has another mother,
The woman in the mirror,
The shadow, who comes
and goes through invisible doors.
You first felt her stir, roll
and kick inside you.
The contraction that announced
her impending arrival,
heard the first cry, touched
the downy fuzz on her head,
And left her.
And I grapple with this,
As she will sooner than I wish.
Without you, I would not be a mother.
Your loss and hers is my gain.
I honor you by loving her
shiny black hair, rosebud mouth,
She is made of you,
how could I not?
How could I understand
That a few days after her birth,
in the deep of winter,
she was left outside.
When she cries in fear or anger,
"I'm cold,"
I am seized with a rage
as icy and unforgiving
as that January night.
When she tells me the life story
of our formerly feral cat
is the same as hers,
I want to weep,
that I can't change it
or make it go away.
Can I say I would never do the same?
No
Judge not…..
Perhaps it was the desperation
of a mother
who throws her children
from a burning building.
Hoping and praying
that someone will catch them.
That they will be safe.
Perhaps, perhaps,
I will never know.
Do you miss her,
wonder at what might have been,
where is she now?
Our daughter is dancing, far away,
dressed in a Cinderella blue gown.
Serving tea to a stuffed turtle,
singing songs of her own invention.
You will never hear her voice.
She will never see your face.
She is neither you or me.
She is the third way,
already crafting her own story.
You gave her life,
I give her a future.
Happy Mother's Day.
A Real Mom
I've been asked if I feel different, if I'm a “real” Mom.
I assure you, I am a real Mom.
When my children are hurt, I cry real tears.
When I see joy on their faces, I smile a real smile.
We laugh together, real laughs.
I defend them like a lioness.
I stand guard over their hearts and nothing gets past me.
While they sleep, I watch.
I look at their hands, and eyes, and expressions, and I see me.
My love is immeasurable.
I hold on to these moments of life, my heart records it all inside.
My daughters are exact answers to prayer.
There's nothing I'd change.
I've been given more than I could have ever even dreamed of.
My daughters are signed masterpieces, signed with God's own hand.
I've seen an awesome God through my children.
If I'd been asked I'd have taken the pain of childbirth for them.
But, instead God made it a birth of the heart.
I’m the natural Mom, it was a lifelong plan.
I'm righteously proud. I've been given first prize.
Anything else I do pales at the blessing of being their Mom.
I'd live content to just sit and watch their every moment.
They should walk tall, for they are valued above all else.
It was not the work of surgeons that strengthened my heart.
It was loving my children that gave me the will
To live to raise my own children.
Well, maybe I do feel different.
If it's different, it's more.

Inheritance
"The best inheritance a person can give to his children is a few minutes of time every day." O. A. Battista
That's good...my children will definitely NOT be getting an inheritance other than my time...and I love spending time with my children.
We had a great time at the Children's Museum's "Late Night Passport Adventure" last night. We heard African drumming, Liberian storytelling, and watched hula dancing. Rachel now wants to be a hula dancer.
Notice we are playing outside WITHOUT jackets! Can it be??? Is winter FINALLY over???

Happy Mother's Day From Rachel
Rachel's kindergarten class made a Mother's Day book. Each student talked about their mothers. It was so funny! One student said, "My mom is nicer than my dad." Another student said, "She's going to buy me a baby shark on Saturday." One boy commented, "She buys me toys and doesn't put me in time out." Several students wrote about the TV shows their mom watch and shopping.
This is what Rachel wrote (I'll add commentary).
I love my mother because she makes me food. Her french fries are my favorite! [I'm glad she likes frozen fries that I throw in the oven.] My mom takes me to the park. She likes to play with me. [This is true.] Her favorite thing to eat is salad. [This is NOT true. I'm just trying to be healthy so I have been eating a lot of salad lately. It helps to balance out the french fries.] She lets me feed the kitty. My mom has golden hair that is very curly. [It is very curly. It isn't exactly golden though. More like gray...golden sounds nice though.] Her eyes are brown. [Nope. My eyes are blue.] She likes to scrapbook. [Yep, that's true.] I love my mom more than a flower. [I love you too, Rachel! Definitely more than a flower!]

Three Years Ago Today
May 8, 2005 was Mother's Day. Why would I remember that? I was impatiently waiting for my TA, my last piece of paperwork allowing me to go to China to adopt Erin Joy. (We didn't need a LOA back then so TA came after LID...for those of you who know what these acronyms mean.)
When I started the process of adopting Erin Joy, I was told by my agency that I would probably travel in February or March. Various delay including lost fingerprints kept holding up my paperwork. That's how it is in adoption....nothing is ever certain...
I was so sure that I would have my coveted TA by Mother's Day. Nope. May 8, 2005 was definitely the worst Mother's Day of my entire life. I was too upset to go to church. I never miss church, but I couldn't bear listening to talks about Mother's Day. I couldn't bear the flowers that they give to mothers. WHERE WAS MY BABY???? I had been staring at her picture for so long and I was done waiting! I was so jealous of other families who had received their TAs and they were DTC/LID after me. It just didn't seem fair. If my TA didn't come in the next few days, I would have to wait even longer. The first week of May is a holiday in China. They celebrate a holiday similar to Labor Day for an entire week. Unless my TA was already in the mail, I would have to wait longer. And wait. And wait. And wait. I was very done waiting. 99 days waiting for my TA was far too long.
Why do I remember May 8, 2005 was Mother's Day? Two days after Mother's Day on May 10th, it came!!!! My TA for Erin Joy! All the pain I felt waiting was immediately replaced with joy. Erin Joy....a perfect name for the joy I felt at that moment. I even remember when the call came. I was teaching math. (Good things happen when I teach math. I received Rachel's referral on October 2, 2002 during a math lesson.)
I was very lucky to get a fast consulate appointment and I traveled the end of May to meet my daughter. I'll write more about that on May 29th.
These are my thoughts this Mother's Day.
I made a little movie with one of my favorite songs featuring all the mothers in my family. Happy Mother's Day to everyone!

Unpredictable
That is what my children are...unpredictable. I never know what they may say or do to embarrass me.
Yesterday we had a "Celebration of Life" service for my Great-Aunt June. Last month, we had a graveside service for family only. Yesterday's service involved family and friends. My Aunt June had a special sister-in-law living in Idaho that wanted to attend so the service was held a month after her passing so she could attend.
I sat on the front row because I was delivering the Life Sketch. To begin the service, a man with a beautiful tenor voice sang a solo. Erin Joy covered her ears and yelled, "TOO LOUD."
I was mortified. I quickly put my hand over her mouth. The damage had already been done. I'm sure the whole room heard her.
Later, a speaker came up to read a poem. She was beautiful. Her long, flowing black hair must have reminded Erin Joy of Pocahontas--her current favorite person. Erin Joy was very excited and said loudly, "There's Pocahontas!" Remember how she pronounces Pocahontas?
I'm sure Aunt June just smiled after both audible comments. She loved silly Erin Joy.
I suppose because Erin Joy had embarrassed me, Rachel had to have a turn.
After the services, we went to an optometrist to get Rachel's glass lenses switched to a new frame. (Her frames have been held together with super glue for the past month or so.) Rachel noticed a slight difference in color between her old frames and her new frames. (Very slight...the new frames are a bit lighter. ) Rachel threw a fit. She did not want the new frames and let everybody in the office know how she felt. She hasn't thrown a fit in public for a long time. I know she did it just to embarrass me. It worked.
The optometrist suggested putting the demo frames in her old frames and the real lenses in her new frames. Then I could switch the old pair for the new pair while she was sleeping. Good idea! However, when the lenses were being switched, the demo lenses were cracked. The plan still worked. Rachel decided she wanted the glasses without the cracked lenses. Good choice. Erin Joy decided she wanted the cracked lenses and was so happy to have glasses like Rachel.
Phew! All's well that ends well!

Future Teachers
Almost daily after teaching school all day, I get to have more school while my girls teach me. We have to do the Pledge of Allegiance, journals, workshops/centers, practice our letters, sing songs, and read stories. Yesterday, I had fun video taping our school session. I took over an hour of video. I cut it to five minutes so it won't be too boring.
I didn't have my camera out when we said the pledge to a balloon because Rachel couldn't find the little flag she got at a Fourth of July parade one year. That was probably not a respectful thing to do, but well...we did it anyway.
I am always the student. Stuffed animals and dolls are also students. Rachel is always the teacher. Erin Joy is sometimes a student and sometimes a teacher. Yesterday, she was a teacher.

Happy Birthday Bella!
I know this is silly, but we celebrated Bella's birthday today. Bella was found with her mother and brother on property that my cousin purchased. We don't really know when her birthday is, but May 1st is probably close. (She's not the only member of our family with an unknown birthdate...)
I have never wanted a pet, but I'm so glad my girls convinced me to get a cat. I really love this cat who is currently sitting on my lap chewing on cords and playing with my mouse. Funny how she has become part of the family.
