Unpredictable

That is what my children are...unpredictable. I never know what they may say or do to embarrass me.

Yesterday we had a "Celebration of Life" service for my Great-Aunt June. Last month, we had a graveside service for family only. Yesterday's service involved family and friends. My Aunt June had a special sister-in-law living in Idaho that wanted to attend so the service was held a month after her passing so she could attend.

I sat on the front row because I was delivering the Life Sketch. To begin the service, a man with a beautiful tenor voice sang a solo. Erin Joy covered her ears and yelled, "TOO LOUD."

I was mortified. I quickly put my hand over her mouth. The damage had already been done. I'm sure the whole room heard her.

Later, a speaker came up to read a poem. She was beautiful. Her long, flowing black hair must have reminded Erin Joy of Pocahontas--her current favorite person. Erin Joy was very excited and said loudly, "There's Pocahontas!" Remember how she pronounces Pocahontas?

I'm sure Aunt June just smiled after both audible comments. She loved silly Erin Joy.

I suppose because Erin Joy had embarrassed me, Rachel had to have a turn.

After the services, we went to an optometrist to get Rachel's glass lenses switched to a new frame. (Her frames have been held together with super glue for the past month or so.) Rachel noticed a slight difference in color between her old frames and her new frames. (Very slight...the new frames are a bit lighter. ) Rachel threw a fit. She did not want the new frames and let everybody in the office know how she felt. She hasn't thrown a fit in public for a long time. I know she did it just to embarrass me. It worked.

The optometrist suggested putting the demo frames in her old frames and the real lenses in her new frames. Then I could switch the old pair for the new pair while she was sleeping. Good idea! However, when the lenses were being switched, the demo lenses were cracked. The plan still worked. Rachel decided she wanted the glasses without the cracked lenses. Good choice. Erin Joy decided she wanted the cracked lenses and was so happy to have glasses like Rachel.

Phew! All's well that ends well!

Yes, aren't little ones so unpredictable? I remember one of my children yelling out in church during a solemn prayer time. Gabe yelled, "Stop it!" to Caleb who was too close to him or picking in some way. Very embarrassing. Oh, another red-faced moment: little Caleb asking very loudly if that woman in the church has a baby in her belly...and no she did not. Hard to recover from that one! The girls look adorable in their new glasses!
